A flip is not a glance

Looking back is the whole game. So when it doesn’t feel right, nothing does.

For weeks it didn’t feel right, and we couldn’t say why. The mechanic worked on paper — you hold a button, you see behind you, the thing that keeps pace comes closer. But holding that button just turned the picture over. The screen flipped, top became bottom, and some part of your body knew it was a trick. You weren’t turning to look behind you. The image was doing a somersault.

A flip is not a glance. A glance is a turn — and a turn has a direction, a distance, and something at the end of it.

That was the moment the honest answer arrived, and it was expensive: looking behind you is spatial. The fear of it lives in the turn itself — the walls sweeping past, the dark having depth, the slow dreadful arc of your own head coming round. You cannot fake that on a flat surface. We had built the game on a flat surface.

So we turned the camera around — for real

We rebuilt the way the game sees. The look-back is now a true turn through space: the corridor slides past, your own shoulder swings into frame, and the eye travels down the dark behind you to where it stands — keeping pace, only its eyes catching the light. It is the difference between reading the word behind and feeling it on the back of your neck.

Here is the part that matters, and the part we’re proud of: we threw almost nothing away. The rules didn’t change. The cost of looking, the thing that keeps pace instead of hunting, the whole design — all of it survived. What we deleted was one flat trick. Everything true about the game came with us.

What it looks like now

Cold. Quiet. A single warm light at the far end that you walk toward and never quite reach. Grain over everything, like a memory that won’t hold still. The dark isn’t a colour any more — it’s a distance.

Right now it’s a rough prototype: grey stand-ins where the faces will go, bare light, no music yet. But the turn is there, and it does the thing to you. The next stretch is filling that dark with what actually belongs in it.

If you looked back and it looked back — that’s the feeling we’re chasing. Follow along and we’ll show you every step of getting there.

The prologue played end to end, glances and all — recorded from the working build. It opens when there’s a version worth handing you.
